Matthew Meier, age 89, of Mapleton, Iowa, died on Saturday, December 24, 1988, in the Maple Heights Nursing Home at Mapleton, Iowa, after a long illness.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 27, 1988, in St. Mary's Catholic Church at Mapleton, Iowa, with the Reverend John Brennan officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery. Military graveside rites was by the American Legion Loren Hollister Post #496 of Mapleton, Iowa. Visitation was after 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 26, 1988, with the rosary recited at 7:30 p.m. in the Walter Funeral Home at Mapleton, Iowa.

Mr. Meier was born on October 16, 1899, to Henry and Sophie (Reeder) Meier in Sac County. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1924 to 1928 and the United States Army during World War II. He married Rose Duncan on January 29, 1952, in Elk Point, South Dakota. The couple lived in Woodbury and Ida Counties before moving to Mapleton, Iowa, in 1964. He farmed and also worked on construction. He worked for three years at the Skyline Bowling Alley in Cherokee, Iowa.

Mrs. Meier died on May 14, 1983.

Mr. Meier was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, Iowa, Loren Hollister Post #496, American Legion of Mapleton, Iowa, and the senior citizens group.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Margaret Gross of Mapleton, Iowa; nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Pallbearers were Ed Meier, Leo Dirksen, Donald Collins, Lawrence Collins, Eugene Collins, and Vincent Meier.
