TURIN, Iowa — A. Merrill "Speck" Johnson, 89, of Turin died Saturday, June 21, 1997, at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Turin with the Rev. David H. Wagner officiating. Burial will be in Belvidere Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.

Mr. Johnson was born Sept. 13, 1907, in Dawson, Minn. the son of Peter E. and Josephine M. (Hall) Johnson. The family moved to Turin in 1920.
He graduated from Onawa High School in 1926. In 1939 he began as manager of Youman Lumber Co., which later became Great Plains Supply Co., in Turin.

He married Lillie Sophie Anderson on July 9, 1939 at the family farm near Turin. He retired in 1972.
He was a member of the Turin United Methodist Church, the Hillcrest Masonic Lodge #648 in Castana, Iowa, Queen Esther Chapter #222 Order of Eastern Star in Onawa, and the Monona County Historical Society. He served as Turin town clerk for 33 years and had been mayor for one term.

Survivors include his wife, three daughters, Judith and her husband Ronald I. Cooper of Englewood,. Colo., Janet S. Maldonado of Omaha, Neb., and Janice and her husband Duane E. Mann of Woodbine, Iowa; a son and his wife, Jon A. and Jackie of Cheyenne, Wyo.; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; seven step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Alice Mackey of Phoenix, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray and Gustav; and a sister, Minnie.
