Gary Wakehouse, 44, of Onawa, Iowa, died Thursday, February 6, 1997, in Decatur, Nebraska, as the result of an accident.

Mr. Wakehouse was born July 5, 1952, at Moorhead, Iowa, the son of Walter and Julia (Rasmussen) akehouse. He was raised in Pisgah, Iowa, attended School in West Harrison, and graduated from West Monona High School in 1971. On July 16, 1976, he married Becky Phipps in Onawa. He was employed at Stangel Brothers Texaco in Onawa for 13 years and at Sorenson Tire Store for the past 7 years.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa where he was confirmed in 1966. He had served on the Onawa Volunteer Fire Department for many years and was involved with Burgess Hospital Ambulance Service, Bobcat Cart Racing, flagman at West Monona football games and umpired softball games. He enjoyed bowling, car racing and golfing and was involved with his children's' activities.

Survivors include his wife, Becky; his daughter, Amber, his two sons, Jared and Alex, and Dustin Beckman whom he cared for, all of Onawa; his mother, Julia Wakehouse of Onawa; his brother and wife, Roy and Janet Wakehouse of Onawa; 2 sisters and their husbands, Sara and Brian Atwell of Little Sioux, Iowa, and Becky and David Vaughn of Castana, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Wakehouse.

Services were held at 10:30 AM Monday, February 10, 1997, at Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa with Rev. Steven C. Hetzel officiating. Mrs. Syril Brown, pianist, played the selection "Wind Beneath My Wings" and "Daddy's Hands". The congregation sang "The Twenty-third Psalm".

Honorary Bearers were the Onawa Fire Department, Mike Bryan, Barry Phipps, Brian Phipps, and Matt Bonine.

Active Bearers were Les Sorenson, Jon Bernes, Jerry Shaffer, Max Bonine, Mike Bartles, and Jim Beck.

Interment was in Belvidere Cemetery at Turin, Iowa, with arrangements by the Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa.
