UTE, Iowa — Leona M. Johnson, 83, of Ute died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, at a hospital in Onawa, Iowa.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Ute Christian Church with the Rev. Mark Smeltzer officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery in Ute. Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. today at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Ute, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. with the Rev. Donald Ludwick officiating.

Mrs. Johnson was born July 14, 1915, at Castana, Iowa, the daughter of Roy and Mary J (Bartholomew) Cooper.

She taught rural school in the Ute and Soldier areas.

She married Vernon Johnson on April 2, 1949, in Moorhead, Iowa. The couple farmed near Soldier, moving to Moville in 1971 and to Ute in 1973.

She was a member of Ute Christian Church since 1954. She was active in the Ladies Aid and Bible
Study at the church. She was the janitor for 16 years at church.

Survivors include a son, Merlin, and his wife, Betty, of Hospers, Iowa; a daughter, Carolyn Johnson of Sioux City; two brothers and their wives, Glen and Joyce Cooper of Tea, S.D., and Leo and Jan Cooper of Odebolt, Iowa; three sisters and their husbands, Edith and John Johnson of Hawesville, Ky., Norma and Dick Larsen of Omaha and Donna and Norris Olson of Estherville, Iowa, and five grandchildren, Emily, Erica, Erin, Elisa and Nicholas.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Rosemary, and two brothers, Wade and G Garrold.
