Max R. Arney, 78, of Onawa, Iowa, died unexpectedly Tuesday, January 28, 1997, at his residence.

Mr. Arney was born August 11, 1918, at Onawa, Iowa, the son of Vinson and Elizabeth (Smith) Arney. In 1936 he graduated from Onawa High School. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army from 1941 - 1945 in the European Theatre. On January 20, 1947, he married Mary Dirksen at Mapleton, Iowa. He farmed for 20 years, retiring in 1968. He was custodian for 13 years at West Monona School, retiring in 1980.

He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Onawa and the Albaugh McGovern American Legion Post #42 in Ankeny, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; a son and his wife, Mitchell Dean and Sharon Arney of Ankeny, Iowa; and a daughter and her husband, Mary Kristeen and Ron Rogers of Crystal Lake, Illinois; and 7 grandchildren, Brian Kirk Arney, Kevin Wade Arney. Meredith Kay Arney, Michelle Deann Arney, Mark Matthew Rogers, Lori Renee Rogers and David Joseph Rogers.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 sisters, Patricia Arney in 1968 and Pauline Gossard in 1996.

A Scripture Service was held at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, January 30, 1997, at the Pearson Funeral Chapel, Onawa, Iowa.

The Funeral Mass was held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, January 31, 1997, at St. John's Catholic Church, Onawa, Iowa, with Father A. E. McCoy, Mass Celebrant. The organist was Mrs. Darrell Hewitt and the soloist, Mr. David Hausman, sang the selections, "One Day At A Time", "One Bread, One Body", "Amazing Grace'', and "On Eagle's Wings".

Casket Bearers were grandchildren, Brian Kirk
Arney, Kevin Wade Arney, Meredith Kay Arney. Michelle Deann Arney, Mark Matthew Rogers, Lori Renee Rogers, and David Joseph Rogers.

Interment was in Harrison Cemetery, Whiting, Iowa, with Military Rites by the Monona County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2694, Onawa, Iowa.

Arrangements were by Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.
