Denman F. Dean, 85, of Sloan, Iowa, died Sunday, February 1, 1998, at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa following a lengthy illness.

He was born December 26, 1912, the son of Bert C. and Edna (Laugh) Dean in Shelton, Nebraska. He graduated from Shelton High School in 1932. After working for the Union Pacific Railroad as a gandy for a couple of years, he came to Iowa and started farming. He entered the Army Air Force on December 19, 1942. After his discharge in 1946 he returned to farming in the Whiting area. On October 1, 1945, he married Helen Fitzgerald at Elk Point, South Dakota. The couple moved from Whiting to Sloan on November 27, 1958 and continued farming. He retired in 1990 and moved into Sloan in 1996. He was very family orientated and enjoyed fishing.

He was a member of the Emery-Johnson American Legion Post #481 at Whiting and the Whiting Rifle Club.

Survivors include his wife, Helen, of Sloan; three sons, James of Whiting, Mike and his wife, Chris of Salix and Greg and his wife, Gwyn of Sloan; three daughters and their husbands, Bev and Ronnie Copple of Salix, Chris and Mike Williams of Runnels, Iowa and Denise and Bob Lestor of Bloomington, Minnesota; two sisters, Opal Deen of Onawa and Alta and her husband Wes Kensinger of Grand Island, Ne.; 12 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Carol Sue; one sister Nora Waite, one brother Ervin and two infant brothers.

Funeral Services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 3, 1998, at the Wood Funeral Chapel, Sloan, Iowa, with Rev. Emery Killian officiating. The organist was Mrs. Norman Westergaard.

Casket bearers were Wayne Copple, Billy Deen, Bob Nelson, Bud Ping, Keith Morton, and Richard Galland.

Interment was in the Hite Cemetery, Whiting, Iowa, with Military Rites by Emery Johnson American Legion Post #481, Whiting, Iowa, Dick Stevenson, Commander.

Arrangements were by Wood Funeral Home, Sloan, Iowa
