Van "Dude" Rowland DeLashmutt, 78, of Blencoe, Iowa, died Sunday, July 11, 1999, at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Whiting, Iowa.

Mr. DeLashmutt was born April 27, 1921 at Elk, Washington, the son of Van Elmer and Ruth Naomi (Rowland) DeLashmutt. His parents moved to Whiting, Iowa, when he was a child. As a young man he enlisted in the CCC and was stationed at the camp at Moorhead, Iowa. He joined the Army National Guard and later was inducted into the Army during World War II. He departed from the service in California under the 3rd Medical Division.

He married Anne Helstrom on September 27, 1944, at Vermillion, South Dakota. He worked as a plumber in Mondamin and at Greenland on a pipeline on the Airstrip defense line. The couple moved to a farm near Turin, Iowa, in 1955 where he engaged in farming. In 1969 they moved to Blencoe where he worked as a railroad track inspector for the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad until his retirement in 1979.

He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, the Eagles Lodge and the DAV. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening. He enjoyed his grandchildren, reading western books, and playing cards. He was a Golden Glove Boxer and was a light weight regional champion. His title when boxing was "Dudi O'del".

Survivors include his wife, Ann, of Blencoe; his children, Dean and his wife, Carol DeLashmutt of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Archie Van 0. DeLashmutt of Blencoe, and June DeLashmutt of Mapleton, Lynn and her husband Wally Hamann of Sioux City and Gary and his wife, Laura DeLashmutt of LeMars, Iowa; 7 grandchildren, Lorette R. Weimann, Aaron V.DeLashmutt, Tate Hamann, Van Wade DeLashmutt, Amanda DeLashmutt, Joe DeLashmutt and Brooke DeLashmutt; 2 great-grandchildren, Stephen Weimann and Scott Weimann; one brother, Max DeLashmutt of Everett, Washington and one sister, Murrl Jones Wickersham of Portland, Oregon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Don and Darrel.

The Prayer Service was at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, 1999, with Pastor John Noer officiating.

Music was provided by Jean Kahler, harpist.

The Funeral Services were 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 14,1999, at the United Church of Christ, Blencoe, Iowa, with Pastor John Noer officiating.

The organist was Mrs. Robert Collison, Jr. and the vocalist, Mrs. Fred Gibson, sang the selection, "Life Is Like A Mountain Railroad". The congregational hymns were "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "For The Beauty Of The Earth".

Honorary Bearers were Lyle Mock, Fred Gibson, Bill Roberg, Herb Helstrom, Steve Seward, Henry Vaniperen, Gene Wallis, and Bill Noble.

Casket Bearers were Lori Weimann, Aaron DeLashmutt, Tate Hamann, Wade DeLashmutt, Amanda DeLashmutt, Joe DeLashmutt, and Brooke DeLashmutt.

Interment was in the Graceland Cemetery, Blencoe, Iowa, with Military Services by Stevens-Kelley American Legion Post #665, Blencoe, Iowa, Marvin Keele, Commander.

Arrangements were by Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.
