Clifford A. "Dick" Cartmell, 88, of Blencoe, Iowa, died Thursday, July 15, 1999, at Pleasant View Care Center, Whiting, Iowa, following a lengthy illness.

Dick was born April 16, 1911, in Castana, Iowa, the son of William and Amy (Atterbury) Cartmell.

He was raised in the Castana and Blencoe area and graduated from Blencoe Consolidated High School in 1929. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and served until his discharge in 1945. On December 9, 1945, he married Ila Silsby Carlson in Randolph, Iowa. The couple made their home in Blencoe. He was employed in the oil business and as an independent insurance agent, retiring in 1976. He served as fire chief of Blencoe for 40 years.

He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Blencoe, Vesper Lodge #223 A.F. & A.M. of Onawa, Sioux City Consistory, the Abu Bekr Shrine Temple in Sioux City; a 50-year member of Stevens-Kelley American Legion Post #665, Blencoe, Iowa, and the Monona County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2694,
Onawa Iowa.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Sherri and Rex Wyland of Tucson, Arizona, and Mary and James Ruble of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; four grandchildren, Dawn Wyland-Bogaert and Doug Wyland and his wife, Kelly, all of Tucson, Arizona, Heidi Ruble of Lacy, Washington, and Heather and her husband, Dennis Wilkie of Sioux City; 4 great-grandchildren, Michaela Bogaert, Myranda Bell, Kelsi Wilkie, and Harrison Wyland.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Randall, Lloyd, and Russell Cartmell, and a sister, Ruby Nicholiason.

Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 19, 1999, at the Congregational United Church of Christ, Blencoe, Iowa, with Pastor John Noer officiating. The organist was Mrs. Robert Collison, Jr. and the vocalist, Mrs. Fred Gibson, sang the selections, "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" and "The Twenty third Psalm". Congregational Hymns were "Now Thank We All Our God" and What A Friend We Have In Jesus".

Honorary Bearers were Donald "Tim" Comfort, Stan Jirovsky, Jack Hodgson, John Hubert, Delbert Collison, and Robert Collison.

Casket Bearers were Charles Hitchman, Earle Potts, Marvin Keele, Robert Comfort, Irvin Frisk, and David Beechy.

Masonic Services were 7:00 p.m. Sunday, July 18, 1999, at the Pearson Funeral Chapel, Onawa, Iowa, by Vesper Lodge #223 A.F. & A.M., Onawa, Iowa, Steve Jewett, Orator, and Harold Johnston, Worshipful Master.

Interment was in Graceland Cemetery, Blencoe, Iowa, with Military Graveside Rites by Stevens-Kelley American Legion Post #665, Blencoe, Iowa, and Monona County Veterans of Foreign Wars #2694, Onawa, Iowa.

Arrangements were by Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.
