BLENCOE, Iowa — John Robert McCord, 66, of Blencoe died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, at his residence.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Pearson Funeral Chapel in Onawa. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Blencoe, with military rites. Visitation will be 6 at 8 p.m. today at the funeral home in Onawa.

Mr. McCord was born June 28, 1932, in Sloan, Iowa, the son of Roy and Pearl (Willet) McCord.

He served in the U.S. Army as a drill instructor and in the Korean War. He was a prisoner of war for two years, before managing to escape with three other soldiers.

Following his discharge, he was employed as a trucking foreman for 15 years with Irving F. Jensen. He later farmed for Roger Heisterkammp in Blencoe.

He married Eunice Irene Gibson on July 11, 1955, in Salix, Iowa.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Monona County Post 2694.

Survivors include his wife; three sons and their wives. Tim and Karla and Jeff and Deena, all of Onawa, and Terrance and Rebecca of Winchester, Va.; three daughters, Rebecca McCord of Madison, Wis., Denise and her husband, Jack Murphy of Blencoe and Donna and her husband, Rick O'Brien, of Sioux City; 18 grandchildren; two brothers, LeRoy and his wife, Dorothy, of Merrimack, N.H., and Harold of Sloan, Iowa; three sisters, Helen Martin of Boulder, Colo., Mary and her husband, Ray Smith, of Rogers, Ark., and, Betty and her husband, Frank Zamora, of Albuquerque, N.M.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his parents-in-law, Wilfred and Esther Gibson; two sisters, Evelyn and Lucy and four brothers-in-law, Steve Gibson, Hugh Clay, Lewis Martin and Everett Schuler.
