Lifelong member of St. Paul's church dies

Marina E. Thies, age 86, of Ute, Iowa, died Tuesday, August 15, 2000, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.

Services were held 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 18 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute with Pastor Edgar Bode officiating. Burial was in St. Clair Cemetery, Ute. Creta Teut was the organist for the service and the congregation sang, "I'm But A Stranger Here" and St. Paul's Choir sang, "The Lord's My Shepherd, I'll Not Want". A prayer service was held at 8:00 p.m. Thursday with Pastor Eugene Ernst officiating at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Ute.

Marina was born January 26, 1914, on a farm near Soldier, Iowa, to Albert and Emma (Torgerson) Timm. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute, Iowa, having been baptized on March 8, 1914, in Jordan Township by
Rev. Reinhold Amstein of St. Paul's, and confirmed April 10, 1927, by Pastor Carl Krog. On March 12, 1940, she was married to Elmer E. Thies by Rev. Hugo Nieting at St. Paul's parsonage.

Marina and Elmer farmed in the Soldier and Ute communities and retired to Ute in 1978. Elmer died January 20, 1989.

Marina was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading, playing Scrabble, sewing, quilting, and crocheting, creating many handcrafted heirlooms for her family. Marina had resided at Maple Heights Nursing Home since February 1997.

Survivors left to cherish her memory include two sons, Richard of Waterloo, Nebraska and Harvey and his wife, Lynette, of Ute, Iowa; four grand-
children, Heidi of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, Angela of Wayne, Nebraska and her fiancée, John Rosener of Ute, Iowa, and John and Melissa, also of Ute.

Also surviving are two sisters and their, husbands, Irma and Kenyon Nelson, and Evelyn and
Robert Schlensig, all of Dunlap, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Hilda Timm of Vancouver, Washington, Esther Berg of Appleton, Wisconsin, and Emma Thies of Dunlap, Iowa; brother-in-law, Rudy and his wife, Hazel of Mapleton, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Along with her husband, Marina was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Walter.

Honorary pallbearers were Marina's grandchildren, Heidi Thies; Angela Thies and John Rosener, John Thies and Melissa Thies.

Pallbearers were Ronald Nelson, Donald Waderich, Irvin Thies, James Nelson, Warren Thies and Gary Pohlman.
