UTE, Iowa - Ellen Emma Lena Thies, 87, of Ute died Monday, July 12, 1999, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute, with the Rev. Edgar Bode officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at Armstrong Funeral Home in Ute.

Mrs. Thies was born Aug. 6, 1911, in Charter Oak, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Minnie (Kroll) Borcherdt. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She was employed as a hired girl in several homes in Ute.

She married Fritz Thies Jr. on Feb. 23, 1933, in Ute. The couple lived on a farm west of Ute for 11 years. In 1944, they moved to a farm north of Ute. They then moved to a farm near Soldier, Iowa, in 1966, where they farmed until retiring. In 1971, they moved into Ute. He died May 18, 1992. She entered Maple Heights Nursing Home in 1996.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid and Mapleton Thursday Club. She enjoyed cooking and playing cards.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Warren and Pat of Ute and Vernon and Evelyn of Mapleton; a daughter and her husband, Judy and Gary Pohlman of Soldier; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and their wives, Roy and Erma Borcherdt and Darl and Ruth Borcherdt.
