UTE, Iowa — James John August Watke, 69, of Ute died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 1997, at an Omaha, Neb. hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ute, with the Rev. Edgar Bode officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5605, the American Legion Aaby Post 442, both of Ute, and with the support of the American Legion Homer Hall Post 66 of Charter Oak, Iowa. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Ute.

Mr. Watke was born July 5, 1928, in Smithland, Iowa, the son of Walter Peter John and Martha Marie (Maach) Watke. The family moved to Spencer, Iowa and then to Charter Oak. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1946 to 1947.

He married Donna Bretthauer on Nov. 25, 1951, in Ute. He was employed on several farms in the Charter Oak area. He later moved to Ute, where he was employed with Meadows Fertilizer, Occidental Chemical and Gregerson Elevator until 1970, when he retired.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5605.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Terry of Ridgecrest, Calif. and Tony of Torrance, Calif.; a daughter, Tanis of Ute; and three grandchildren, Leah, Justin and Kevin Watke.

He was preceded in death by his father. His mother survived him, but died Thursday, Sept. 25, 1997.
