ONAWA, Iowa — Donald Lester Matson, 64, of Onawa died Monday, May 26, 1997, at the Veterans Hospital in Omaha, Neb. following a brief illness.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in St. Clair Cemetery at Ute, Iowa, with the Rev. Donald R. Ludwick officiating. Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.

Mr. Matson was born June 29, 1932, in Iola, Wis., the son of Oscar and Dorothy (Miller) Matson. The family moved to Iowa, where he attended school at Soldier and Mapleton, Iowa. He served in the armed forces during the Korean War.

He was employed as a carpenter's assistant with Haubrick Lumber Company in the 1960s. In April 1971, he was employed by the City of Onawa, retiring in June 1983. He had made his home at the Park Hotel for 29 years.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Monona County Post 2694. He enjoyed driving.

Survivors include a brother, Vernon LeRoy of Reno, Nev.; his special friends, Hope and Earl Thelander of Onawa; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents
