UTE, Iowa — Billy Dean Petersen, 62, of Ute died Tuesday, May 13, 1997, at the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Neb. following a brief illness.

Funeral Mass services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Charter Oak, Iowa, with the Rev. Ben Jensen officiating.

Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery at Ute, with military rites conducted by the Ute Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5605. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a vigil wake service at 7 p.m., at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Ute.

Mr. Petersen was born July 18, 1934, in Carroll, Iowa, the son of William H.F. and Lola (Graham) Petersen. He was raised in the Denison, Iowa area and graduated from the Denison High School in 1953.

He married Marlene Torgerson on June 18, 1955, in Ute. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958. The couple lived in Denison and moved to Ute in 1964, where he owned and operated the Ute Service Garage. In 1979, he was employed as the transportation coordinator and bus driver with the Charter Oak-Ute Community School District, until his retirement in July 1996.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5605 and the Ute Volunteer Fire Department since 1964. He served on the Ute Town Council from 1970 until 1984 and was the Mayor of Ute from 1986 to 1988. He was a board member of the Ute Senior Citizens and a member of the Monona County Economical Board.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Kevin and his wife Sharon of Pisgah, Iowa and Kurt and Kris of Missouri Valley, Iowa; his mother of Denison; two brothers and their wives, Robert and Sharon of Armstrong, Iowa and Jim and Karen of Denison; and two grandchildren, Cana Kay and Kody Dean.

He was preceded in death by his father.
