August (Wilson) Gruber, 83, Onawa, Iowa, died Saturday, October 10, 1998, at Pleasant View Nursing Home at Whiting, Iowa.

He was born February 7, 1915, at Castana, Iowa, the son of August Otto and Emma (Weaver) Gruber. He graduated from the Castana High School. During World War II he served in the Navy. He was a rural mail carrier serving the Castana area from March 16, 1948 until he retired April 28, 1980. He moved to Onawa in 1973.

He was a member of the Ticonic Methodist Church; a 53 year member of the Grimsley-Thayer American Legion Post #502 at Castana; the Monona County Rural Carriers Association; and he enjoyed bowling, fishing and all sports.

Survivors include a sister, Mary Thayer and her husband Ted of North Platte, Nebraska; two nieces and their husbands, Betty and Roger Stender of Blair, Nebraska and Bonnie and Gary Kendall of Onawa; one nephew and his wife Norman and Karen Rutledge of Henderson, Arkansas; and a brother-in-law and his wife, Orville and Harriet Rutledge.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Susie Rutledge.

Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 13, 1998, at the Castana Community Church, Castana, Iowa, with Rev. Robert W. Fritzmeier officiating. The organist was Mrs. Paul Petersen and the vocalists, Mrs. Brady Hanson and Mrs. Harvey Hanson, sang the selections, "Why Me Lord", "One Day At A Time", and "His Eye Is On The Sparrow".

Casket Bearers were Bob Hardison, Scott Kendall, Roger Saxen, Brad Stender, Brady Hanson, and Michael Kendall.

Interment was in the Jordan Township Cemetery, Soldier, Iowa, with Military Rites by Grimsley-Thayer American Legion Post #502, Castana, Iowa, Don Davis, Commander. Arrangements were by Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.
