SOLDIER, Iowa — Joe Jary, 79, formerly of Soldier died Friday, March 14, 1997, at the Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Soldier Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Paul E. Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Jordan Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Pearson Funeral Home of Soldier.

Mr. Jary was born Feb. 21, 1918, in Vilov, Czechoslovakia, the son of Fred and Mary (Kadlec) Jary. He came with his family to the United States and Monona County in 1929 and began farming. He graduated from Whiting High School in 1938 and attended Iowa State University for three years. He served with the U.S. Army Engineers during World War II. He lived in the Whiting, Onawa and Moorhead, Iowa, areas.

He married Ruth Johnson on June 18, 1960, in Onawa. The couple made their home in Soldier and operated the J & R Grocery Store and Flower Shop from 1966 to 1976. They continued their flower business from their home. He was also employed with the Walnut Grove Feed Dealer and was a rural mail carrier. He had been a resident of the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Whiting since July 1996.

He was a member of the Soldier Lutheran Church and the Soldier Valley American Legion Post 462.

Survivors include his wife of Whiting; a sister and her husband, Mary and Tony Santora of Omaha, Neb.; a brother, Leo of Onawa; a sister-in-law, Joy Jory of Whiting; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Fred and two infant brothers.
