MAPLETON, Iowa | Robert G. "Bob" Letterly, 67, of Mapleton died Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at his home surrounded by his family.

There will be a Bob Letterly Memorial Jam Session at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Bob’s home, 10 Elmwood Drive, in Mapleton, which family and friends are encouraged to attend. Arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Robert Gregg "Bob" Letterly was born on June 28, 1947, in Onawa, Iowa, the son of Robert Velmo and June (Rodgers) Letterly. He grew up in the Onawa community and graduated from West Monona High School with the class of 1965. He attended the University of Nebraska in Omaha from 1966 to 1968.

In August 1970, Bob married Pam Chapman.

He joined the U.S. Navy, serving during the Vietnam War. He was stationed in Fallon, Nev. with the Pacific Fleet Aviation Electronics Training Unit. Upon his honorable discharge, Bob worked for the State of Nevada, Department of Highways in Carson City.

In 1973, he attended the Northrop University in Englewood, Calif., graduating in 1975 with a degree in aerospace maintenance engineering. He then began his career in aerospace technology in Seattle, Wash., and Canoga Park, Calif., with the Boeing Aerospace Company. Along with many other detailed responsibilities, Bob worked in liaison, configuration control, test support and repair and maintenance of the Roland Missile System. He later retried from his position as an electronics engineering assistant.

Bob returned to Iowa 17 years ago and had resided in Mapleton. On May 20, 2013, Bob was united in marriage to Loann Marie Moody at his home.

He was a gifted musician and enjoyed time spent with friends and family playing the music he created as well as that of numerous other musical artists. He played the banjo, the mandolin, the fiddle, and the guitar, thus his life was appropriately being celebrated with a jam session.

With his knowledge of aerospace, Bob was able to hand build remote control helicopters and airplanes and then share in the fun of flying his creations.

Survivors include his wife, Loann Letterly of Mapleton; two stepdaughters, Heather Adams of Seattle, Wash., and Tarra Cunningham of Mapleton; two stepsons, James Moody of Fort Campbell, Ky., and Johnny Moody of Mapleton; one daughter, Francesca Letterly of Seattle; two sons, Joshua Letterly and Lukas Letterly (Roxanne Purdue), all of Seattle; five grandchildren, Olivia, Cassius, Ezekiel, Jaxen, and Charley; one sister, Linda Ganion (Gary) of Everetts, Wash.; three special friends who were like brothers to Bob, Jack Templeton of Whiting, Iowa, Rich Delisie of Roy, Wash., and Jim Rock of San Diego, Calif.; and many other good friends.
