ONAWA, Iowa — Agnes Thoreson, 91, of Onawa died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 1997, at the Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Soldier Lutheran Cemetery at Soldier, Iowa. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.

Miss Thoreson was born July 14, 1906, in Humbolt, S.D., the daughter of Theodore and Levina Christine (Larson) Thoreson. She was raised by her grandmother, Agnet Skow in Brandt, S.D., following her mothers death. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She graduated from Brandt High School in 1926. Following graduation, she moves to Soldier.

In 1927, she attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She had taught at Hartigan School in Soldier Township, Jordon Township 8 for three years, Hiawatha in Belvidere Township for two years, Willow 8 in Willow Township, Moorhead, Iowa, for one year, and returned to Willow 8. In 1948, she moved to Onawa, where she taught first grade.

In 1949, she received her teaching certificate at Cedar Falls and upgraded her teaching certificate at Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb. She retired in 1971, after teaching for 43 years.

She was a member of Soldier Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School and Bible School, Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa, the National Teachers Retirement Association, the State Association of Retired Teachers, the Iowa State Education Association, and the National Education Association.

She is survived by her cousins. She was preceded in death by a brother, Nicholie Thoreson.
