Former State Representative Passed Away

Elroy Maule, Onawa, Iowa, died on April 19, 1984, at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa following a lengthy illness. Death came at the age of 70 years, 11 months and three days.

He was born May 16, 1913, to Charles and Jennie McElroy Maule in Raglan Township, Harrison County, Iowa. He moved to Onawa with his parents in 1913 when he was six months old. He was a 1931 graduate of Onawa High School. After graduation from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, in 1936, he taught science and was Principal and coach at Shueyville High School in Johnson County, Iowa. He received his Secondary Principal's Certificate from the Iowa State Board of Education in 1938 after graduate work at both the University of Iowa and the University of Colorado.

On January 1, 1933, he was married to Evangeline Wickersham at Elk Point, South Dakota. In the spring of 1941 the couple moved to a farm west of Onawa in Lincoln Township in Monona County where they have continued to make their home. He was active in the Onawa Boy Scout Troop, former President of the Monona County Farm Bureau, has served on the Methodist Church Board and was a choir member for several years.

He was a Democrat State Representative from Monona County from 1957 through 1965. He was majority floor leader in 1965 in the House. He served on the Iowa Boundary Committee in the 1960's. He was a Business Administrator for the Iowa State Conservation Commission in 1965 through 1966.

He taught high School sciences and chemistry for six years in the West Harrison Community High
School at Mondamin, Iowa, retiring in 1975. He received the Soil Conservation Award, as a teacher, for the Southwest Iowa District from the Des Moines Tribune in 1973.

The couple celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1983.

Survivors include his wife, Evangeline, of Onawa; his son, John, of Onawa; his daughter, Mrs. Rodger (Mary) Brubaker of Flagstaff, Ariz.; one brother, Robert Maule of Turin, Ia.; two sisters, Mrs. William (Lois) Beedle and Mrs. Myles (Inez) DeSomer, both of Onawa; nine grandchildren and a niece, Mrs. Frank (Genevieve) Sulek of Lafferty, Ohio, whom Evangeline and Elroy raised.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services were held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, 1984, at the United Methodist Church, Onawa, with Rev. Herbert Foxworthy, officiating and Rev. Everett Pencook assisting. Mrs. Jack Jordan, the organist, accompanied - Jim Jordan, who sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Amazing Grace".

Honorary Bearers were Harry Hoffman, Robert Russell, Leonard Kloubec, William Hathaway, Jim Craford, Tom Whitmore, Fred Sanders, Don Maule, Ed Jones, Lyle Ross, John Lund, George King, Don Reese, Dave West, Charles Persinger, Virgil Johnson, Jim Tallman, F.E. McElmurry, Hon. Harold Mueller, Hon. Donald Doyle and Hon. Franklin Main.

Active Bearers were Scott Maule, David Maule, Jim Maule, Dick Beedle, Robert Jensen and Stephen Allen.

Interment was in the Onawa Cemetery with arrangements by the Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.
