MAPLETON, Iowa | Lyle E. Weikel, 79, of Mapleton passed away Monday, June 16, 2014, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Harvey Hanson officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Mapleton.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Lyle Weikel was born on Aug. 28, 1934, near Whiting, Iowa, the son of Lloyd and Ruby (Folsom) Weikel. He graduated from Mapleton High School with the class of 1952. He worked with his dad on the farm. He moved to Omaha in 1956 and worked there until March 1966 when he returned to Mapleton and engaged in farming.

He was united in marriage to Linda Marie Otto on Jan. 18, 1958, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton. The couple farmed in the Mapleton area for many years. Linda passed away on June 27, 1995, and Lyle retired from farming in 1999. He worked at Maple Valley School for two years after moving into town.

Over the years, he served on various boards in the area. He served on the extension council for four years, and the 4-H Youth Committee for five years of which he was chairman for four of those years. He also served on Center Township as a trustee for five years and Cooper Township for five years. He was a member of the Mapleton Co-op board of directors for six years, serving as president for five of those years. He was also a director at Berne Co-op in Ute, Iowa, for 10 years.

Lyle played Santa Claus in Mapleton, Danbury, Castana, Iowa, and surrounding areas starting in 1977 when he took over for his father-in-law, Lawrence Otto. He continued for 17 years and received several awards for his community service. He enjoyed being Santa Claus to the area and had many, many great memories over the years. He always said it was a special time for him.

He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton and was active on various boards.

Lyle enjoyed many things in life. He loved farming, spending time with family and friends, attending his grandchildren's events, baseball, and a good game of Euchre.

He is survived by his son, Lee Weikel and his wife, Cindy of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Andrew Lee Weikel of Ankeny, Iowa, Kari Susan Stender of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Brittany Marie Weikel of Remsen, Iowa; two brothers, Rex Weikel and his wife, Beverly of Sloan, Iowa, and Gary Weikel and his wife, Valerie of Sioux City; a sister, Marlene Siglin of Hernando, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Linda Marie Weikel; parents, Lloyd and Ruby Weikel; and a brother, Wayne Weikel.
