Doris married Ardell Louis Persinger on December 17, 1944, at the Methodist Church in Vineland, New Jersey. While Ardell served as a test pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in Kastl, Germany, Doris returned to Pana, IL, to live with her parents and work at the First National Bank in Pana.

Her travels included Mexico, Hawaii, Canada, and several trips to Europe where she enjoyed art museums and the outdoors.
