Betty L. Hamel, 75, of Onawa, Iowa, formerly of Omaha, Nebraska died Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at the First Christian Church, Onawa, Iowa with Pastor John Sears, officiating. Burial will be in the Harrison Cemetery, rural Whiting, Iowa. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Monday, June 16, 2014 with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. at the Rush Family Chapel, Onawa, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.

Betty Louise was born December 16, 1938 in Onawa, Iowa the daughter of Lyle and Doris (Mackey) Cockerton. Betty graduated from Whiting High School in 1957. She then attended business college in Omaha, Nebraska. She worked in book keeping and accounting for Bickels Meat Center in Omaha, NE for over 20 years. She also worked for Prairie Park Nursing Home in Omaha, NE. Betty and LeRoy Hamel were united in marriage on June 23, 1985 in Onawa, Iowa. LeRoy passed away March 12, 1993 in Omaha, Nebraska.

Betty had a great love of her family, especially her "Mama", Doris. She loved all kids, and enjoyed spending time with people. She had a special gift of caring for anyone in need. Betty enjoyed 4-H, playing bingo, dog races, casinos, and caring for all animals, especially dogs. She was full of life and had a great witty sense of humor. She told it like it was and she knew no stranger in life. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Betty was baptized at the Whiting Christian Church, Whiting, Iowa. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Onawa, Iowa.

She is survived by her loving mother, Doris Cockerton of Onawa, Iowa; many cousins, aunts, uncles, and numerous friends; her special extended family, Melinda Alsman and family; and her beloved dog, Susie.

She was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy; and her father, Lyle.

Casket Bearers will be John Hardison, Bob Hardison, Steve Maher, Gary Alsman, Aaron Debartolo, and Chris Maher.

Honorary Bearers will be Gary Warengo, Terry Dutton, Bert Hanson, and Jeromy Hardison.
