Evelyn Doris Uhl, 92, died June 2 in Omaha, Neb. She was born Aug. 16, 1921, at Smithland. She was the daughter of Nelson and Mildred (Dowling) Sherman.

Evelyn was raised on a farm near Grant Center where she attended grade school. After graduating from Smithland High School in 1940, she married Melvin F. Uhl of Mapleton on June 4. They were married 58 years before Melvin’s death in 1998.

The couple first farmed near Climbing Hill before moving to a 160 acre farm near Grant Center. They remained on the farm for 37 years raising their five children: Sharon, Glennis, Ronald, Terry, and Sindea, before moving to Onawa in 1981.

In 2007, Evelyn moved from Moville to Omaha, Neb., to be close to her son after having been diagnosed with dementia.

Evelyn enjoyed playing cards, cooking, sewing, watching her children in numerous activities, dancing, and socializing. She was always smiling and had the most infectious laugh. She loved engaging strangers in conversation, once missing a flight during a layover due to this wonderful attribute of her personality. This delightful lady will be missed!

She was preceded in death by husband, Melvin F. Uhl; son, Ronald; daughter, Sindea Gilbert; and four grandchildren, John, Kim, Jeffery, and Travis; and sister, Sharon Lloyd.

She is survived by daughters, Sharon (Dave) Mesker of Las Vegas, Nev., and Glennis (Bill) Schnieder of Stanton, Calif.; son, Terry (Devera) Uhl, of Omaha, Neb.; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Mass of the Christian Burial was Saturday, June 7, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Onawa with Rev. John Baptist Busuulwa officiating.

A Tribute to Grandma Uhl was by Deborah Uhl.

Message in Music was by Jane Heisterkamp, organist, and David Hausman, vocalist, and included “On Eagles Wings,” “We Remember,” “Ave Maria,” and “Hail Mary Gentle Woman.”

Pallbearers were Neil Lloyd, Roger Lloyd, Kevin Lloyd, Mark Lloyd, Bryan Uhl, Gene Hilton. Honorary Pallbearers were Evelyn’s 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Saturday, June 7, one hour prior to the Mass at St. John’s Catholic Church, Onawa.

Private Family Interment was at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Mapleton.
