WHITING, Iowa | Kathryn Kay (Poynter) Smith, 62, joined her family circle in heaven on June 4, 2014, at Pleasant View Care Center, Whiting following a sudden illness.

A celebration of life service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Whiting Christian Church, with the Rev. Reva B. Karstens officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Union State Line Cemetery, Petersburg, Minn. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.

Katy was born on Oct. 2, 1951, in Estherville, Iowa. She was the fourth child of Paul and Lucille (Cushman) Poynter. Katy’s childhood years were spent on the family farm in Petersburg, Minn., with the exception of five years between 1961 and 1966, when the family moved to Terril, Iowa. She graduated from Jackson High School in Jackson, Minn. in 1969.

Katy was united in marriage to Robert Smith in February 1970. For several years Katy and Bob made their home in Windom, Minn., and Spirit Lake, Iowa. They were blessed with two beautiful daughters, Stephanie Raquel Wieck of Marengo, Iowa, and Bobbi Jo Kay Wright of Lawton, Iowa. Katy’s accomplishments include being a licensed beautician in the early years of their marriage to becoming a licensed nursing home administrator in 1993. She began her career as a nursing home administrator at Cresco Nursing Home in Cresco, Iowa. For the past 17 years, Katy had served the community of Whiting as the administrator of Pleasant View Care Center.

Katy’s giving spirit and loving heart impacted everyone who was blessed to have known her. Memories of Katy singing with her family and creating fun wherever she went will be cherished by all who loved her. Katy’s nieces and nephews affectionately called her "Crazy Kate." One of her greatest joys was sitting around a campfire with all her loved ones at the family farm. What Katy treasured most in life was her family.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 44 years, Robert; her daughters and their husbands, Stephanie and Martin Wieck and their children, Parker (14), Paige (11), and Bobbi Jo and Wray Wright and their children, Ashley (16) and Wray (2); her mother, Lucille Poynter of Whiting; brothers, Adrian Poynter of Forest Lake, Minn., and Steven (Debbie) Poynter of Marine on St. Croix, Minn.; sisters, Sandra (Kenny) Richardson of Dickens, Iowa, and LuAnn (Roger) Rogge of Marcus, Iowa; many nieces and nephews; and numerous other family and friends.

Katy is preceded in death by her father, Paul Poynter; in-laws, Verland and Wilma Smith; sister-in-law, Phyllis Poynter; brother-in-law, Robert Barrick; and infant niece, Paula Poynter.

God’s choir has a new angel. Our loss is heaven’s gain
