Betty J. Schmidt, 68, of Sioux City passed away on Sunday, December 23, 2007, in a local hospital after a lengthy illness.

The memorial service was held on Saturday, December 29, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Oto with Pastor Karen Handke officiating.

Arrangements were under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home of Anthon.

Betty Jean was born on February 6, 1939, in Onawa to Harvey and Clara Allen. She later moved to Sioux City where she was united in marriage to Keny Schmidt of Anthon on November 30, 1969. They lived around the Oto, Battle Creek, and Castana. The last farm on which she lived was Timber Ridge Sawmill. She remained there until she became ill and moved back to Sioux City.

Betty enjoyed cooking, watching game shows, playing Bingo, and being around her friends, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Kenny; a daughter, Jean Grimes of Sioux City; a son, Caleb Grimes and his wife Alissa of Overton, NE; 5 grandchildren, Elizabeth (Shawn) Mapes of Sioux City, Brandon (Lisa) Grimes of Alamogordo, NM, and Tabitha, Mitchell, and Veronyka of Overton, NE; 3 great grandchildren, Peyton, Emma Jean, and Shawn; her sisters and brothers, Martha Klave, Norman (Violet) Allen, and Linda Johnson all of Sioux City; Harvey Allen of Everett, WA, Cindy Tiemann of Seattle, WA, Kathy Shingobee of Minneapolis, MN, and Roger Allen of Yuma, AZ.

Preceding Betty in death were her parents; her daughter, Mary Kay Lehr; and her great grandson, Kayden Kristopher Montelongo.
