Gladys Irene Williams 1912 - 2014

Gladys Irene Williams (born: Peterson), 101 years of age, of Westridge Gardens Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Raytown, Missouri passed away at 12:15 pm, 26 January 2014.

Born, December 6, 1912, to Peter Arthur Peterson and Minnie Bolt of Soldier, Iowa. She was the granddaughter of Tonnes M. Pederson & Henriette Julie Hansen and Hans Hansen Holt & Anna Amunson, all of Soldier, Iowa. Gladys and her older brother, Marion grew up on the family farm, northeast of Soldier.

She attended elementary school in Soldier and graduated Valedictorian from Soldier High School in 1930. She left Soldier to marry Donald Dean and perform in traveling theater.

Although that marriage would end in divorce, her travels would relocate her in Kansas City, Missouri.

While living in Kansas City, Gladys worked in retail for several Kansas City department stores and specialty stores including Emery, Byrd & Thayer and Beck Planet. She married John Sprofera, detective, Kansas City, Missouri Police Department. He passed away in 1946.Gladys married John Williams in 1953. They lived in Kansas City and the suburban area.

They enjoyed hosting friends and working together in their business which was located several blocks south of the Plaza on Main St.

After separation from Mr. Williams, Gladys moved to Omaha, Nebraska. Gladys worked as a Unit Secretary in Lutheran Memorial Hospital until her retirement. Her mother moved to Omaha to live with Gladys until her death in 1977. Gladys returned to Kansas City where she exchanged her favorite football team, the Big Red of Nebraska, for the Red & Gold of the KC Chiefs. She and many residents at Westridge Gardens, formerly, Park Place Care Center, watched the Chief's games every Sunday with great enthusiasm.

In her younger days Gladys enjoyed the sport of bowling, had a flair for the dramatic, and was seldom seen without her lipstick and sparkles.

Gladys was an active member of the Solder Lutheran Church while she resided in Soldier and Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church in Omaha.

She leaves no children of her own. She is survived by her nephew, Arthur (Francoise) Peterson of Macomb, Illinois, her great nephew, Thierry Peterson of Santa Rosa, California, her great niece, Stacy Peterson, of Peoria, Illinois and step daughters Pauline and Barbara Sprofera of Raytown, Missouri.

Visitation was held at 10:00 a.m. February 5, 2014 at the Soldier Lutheran Church (in town) with services at 10:30 a.m. and refreshments at 11:00 a.m.
