Leona C. Hodgen, 91, of Remsen, died Friday, February 23, 2001 at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City.

The former Leona Carol Downs was born May 1, 1909 at Overton, NE, the daughter of Edward J. and Edna J. (Acker) Downs. She was raised in the Overton and Elm Creek, NE. area and graduated from high school at Elm Creek. In 1928, she moved to Onawa, IA. On March 6, 1942, she married Everett E. Hodgen at Creighton, NE. Following their marriage the couple made their home in Remsen. Mr. Hodgen passed away on December 12, 1979.

Leona was a longtime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Remsen and was active in various women's groups. Painting, sewing, gardening, and cooking were some of her favorite pastimes.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Martha Hodgen of Remsen; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two brothers, Vernon and Samual Hudson Downs; a sister, Sara Olive Downs; and three sisters-in-law, Ruth Downs, Pansy Downs and Florence Smith.

Funeral Services were held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 26, 2001 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Remsen, with Reverend Craig D. Miller officiating. Burial was in the Marcus Amherst Cemetery.

Visitation was from 11:30 until service time at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Remsen.

Arrangements were by Feuerstein Funeral Home.
