Lifetime member of Castana Legion Post dies

Donald Byron McDonald, age 83, of Soldier, Iowa, died Friday, September 8, 2000, at his residence in Soldier.

He was born January 6, 1917, at Castana, Iowa the son of Levi and Jennie (Robbins) McDonald. He was baptized in the Congregational Church at Castana and the Christian Church at Onawa. In 1935 he graduated from Castana High School. Following graduation, he worked at the Castana Post Office. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War for four years. On June 15, 1941, he married Maxine Mann in Las Vegas, Nevada, and the couple farmed at Castana. He was also employed at the Turin Farm Service and worked for the Iowa State Liquor Commission as manager of the Onawa store for 21 years. He retired in 1981 and the couple moved to Soldier in 1985.

He was a lifetime member of the Grimsley-Thayer American a Legion Post #502 of Castana; a member of the Hillcrest Lodge #648 A.F. & A.M. at Castana
and the Vesper Lodge #223 A.F. & A.M. at Onawa; a member of the Sioux City Scottish Rite Bodies and the Abu Bekr Shrine Temple.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine of Soldier; two daughters and their husbands, Judy and Roger Ehlers of Soldier and Karen and Denny Miller of Sioux City; four grandchildren, Shannon and Jill Ehlers and Juli and Tom Miller; two sisters, Ardis and her husband, Archie Lathrop of Lakewood, California, and Ruth Lathrop of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and one brother, Maynard and his wife, Mildred McDonald of Onawa; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Levi and Jennie; five brothers, Russell, Robert, Lawrence, Everett "George" and Marion; and one sister, Vera Dobrovolny.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 12, 2000, at the Castana Community Church, Castana, Iowa, with Rev. Robert W. Fritzmeier officiating. The organist, Mrs. Jack Jordan, played the selections, "The Old Rugged Cross", "Rock of Ages", and "Whispering Hope".

Honorary Bearers were Shannon Ehlers, Jill Ehlers, Juli Miller, Tom Miller, Brian Ermer, Harley Burson, Dennis Burson, Swede Heisler and Raymond Letterly.

Casket Bearers were Keith Carlson, Grant Mann, Terry Mann, Harold Johnston, Gene Banks, and Floyd Redwing.

Masonic services were held at 7:00 p.m. Monday, September 11, 2000, at the Pearson Funeral Home Chapel in Onawa, Iowa, by Hillcrest Lodge #648 A.F. & A.M. and Vesper Lodge #223 A.F. & A.M. with Robert Jessen, Worshipful Master.

Interment was in Belvidere Cemetery, Turin, Iowa, with Military Rites by Grimsley-Thayer American Legion Post #502, Castana, Iowa, with Don Davis, Commander.
