ONAWA, Iowa | Herold Max Meyer, 80, Tonganoxie, Kan., formerly of Onawa, died Sunday, April 20, 2014, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Martin Lutheran Church in Kansas City, Kan. Visitation with the family will be 1 p.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Quisenberry Funeral Home in Tonganoxie.

Herold was born on March 24, 1934, in Waverly, Iowa, to Kurt W. and Anna (Bast) Meyer. He was the fourth of seven children. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly.

Herold began working for Northwestern Bell (US West) Telephone Company in 1950 as a maintenance cable technician (cable splicer). He graduated from Waverly High School in 1952. He was drafted in 1955 to the U.S. Army Signal Corps. He served on active duty for two years.

He married Arlene Reints on April 24, 1955, at Pleasant Valley Church in Clarksville, Iowa. Their marriage was blessed with five children, Kim, Kurt, Jean Ann, Brian and Stephen.

He dedicated the majority of his life to the Boy Scouts of America and his church. He joined Cub Scouts in 1943 and became a Boy Scout in 1946. He held many leadership positions in multiple troops and councils in Iowa and Kansas. He had been recognized with 14 prestige awards from the Boy Scouts of America including the Silver Beaver award and level 4-bead Wood Badger.

He served numerous times on the church council at Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa, Iowa, and remained an active congregation member until the time he moved from Onawa to Tonganoxie. He then joined St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Kansas City, Kan., where he has been active until his death.

He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He was an avid collector of Boy Scout and telephone memorabilia.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 58 years, Arlene; their children, Kurt (Rosemary) Meyer of Shawnee, Kan., Jean Hicks of Kansas City, Mo., Brian (Nancy) Meyer of Tonganoxie, and Stephen (Angela) Meyer of Dayton, Ohio; grandchildren, Michael (Tara) Whitmire of Omaha, Paul (Danielle) Whitmire of Ankeny, Iowa, Abby (James) Meister of Wall Lake, Iowa, Andrew (Angela) Whitmire of Ames, Iowa, Beck Meyer of Seattle, Wash., Luke Meyer of Shawnee, Shane Hicks of Kansas City, Sarah Meyer of Tonganoxie, Connor Meyer and Callum Meyer of Dayton; great-grandchildren, Kaidan and Keegan Whitmire, Madison and Max Meister, Alex Boylen-Kinna, Adyn and Aethyr Boylen-Whitmire; siblings, Herbert (Claudette) of Waverly, Margaret (Lynn) Poppen of Charles City, Iowa, Carl (Marvelyn) Meyer of Dunkin, S.C., and John (Barbara) Meyer of Fairfield, Iowa; brother-in-law, Leonard (Darlene) Reints of Plainfield, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Kim (Meyer) Whitmire; his sisters, Laura (Meyer) Gray, and Marie (Meyer) Zelle; his mother and father-in-law; and his brother-in-law.

Memorials are suggested to the church.
