CIVIL WAR VET OF SLOAN DIES
Funeral Services to Be Conducted Thursday for W. J. HudgelWilliam Jeptha Hudgel, 97, widely known Civil War veteran of Sloan, Ia., died in his home there Tuesday night, after a long illness. He was one of the 4 remaining veterans of the General Hancock post of the Grand Army of the Republic, and the last veteran at Sloan.
Mr. Hudgel was born in Fairfield county, Ohio, September 25, 1840. He enlisted in Company D, 39th Iowa infantry, August 13, 1862, and participated in many major battles with the Union forces before his honorary discharge at Davenport, Ia., nearly 3 years later, May 25, 1865. He had been offered various offices in the G. A. R., but refused them because of other interests.
After his discharge he returned to Clarke county, Iowa, where he purchased an 80-acre farm. After several years, he entered the mercantile business at LaSalle, Ia. He then moved to Monona county where he purchased a farm in Fairview township in March, 1872. He moved to Woodbury county, near Sloan in 1888. During his residence there he held various township and school offices. He maintained an active interest in public affairs, and was mentally keen until his death.
The veteran was an active member of the Christian church of Sloan. His wife, Priscilla Polly Hudgel, died October 6, 1931.
Survivors include 2 sons, Austin E. of Sloan and Richard of Anthon; and 3 daughters, Mrs. J. H. Archer, Miss Jessie E. Hudgel and Miss Maude B. Hudgel, all of Sloan.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the home at Sloan, with burial in Harrison cemetery, southwest of Sloan, under direction of Westcott-Doughty-Chandler funeral home.
