William "Dean" Payne Sr., 1932 - 2014

CASTANA, Iowa | William "Dean" Payne Sr., 81, of Onawa, Iowa, formerly of Castana, died unexpectedly Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at his residence.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, with the Rev. Harvey Hanson officiating. Burial will be in Kennebec Cemetery, Castana. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home.

William Dean Payne was born on Aug. 26, 1932, in Mapleton, Iowa, the son of Harley G. and Violet (Van Cleve) Payne. He was raised and attended school in Mapleton.

William Dean Payne and Donna Mae Kurth were united in marriage on Sept. 11, 1950, in Mapleton. The couple lived in the Castana area for more than 47 years. Donna Mae passed away on Aug. 23, 2008, in Onawa. Dean had lived at Center Heights Apartments in Onawa since August 2013. Dean farmed with his father near Castana and also worked construction jobs. He also worked for the Monona County Secondary Roads Department for more than 26 years.

Dean was an avid bowler and enjoyed the fishing in this area.

Survivors include three daughters, Barb (Troy) Allen of Turin, Iowa, Sandra (David) Behrendsen of Mesa, Ariz., and Darla and (Chad) Polkinghorn of Salix, Iowa; four sons, Jerry (Deb) of Ida Grove, Iowa, Russell of Lincoln, Neb., Larry of Geneva, Neb., and Bill (Christi) Payne of York, Neb.; 17 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Donna Mae; son, Roger Payne; grandchildren, Jace Payne and Kari James; sister, Twila Oregon; stepbrothers, Francis Burkhart and Clarence Burkhart; and stepsister, Betty Jacoby.
