18 April 2002Verda Lee Newland, 34, of Sioux City died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Riverside United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Merrill G. Muller officiating. Burial will be in Whiting Cemetery, Whiting, Iowa. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.
Ms. Newland was born Aug. 22, 1967, in Onawa, Iowa, the daughter of Billie Joe and Shirley (Larson) Newland. She graduated from West High School in 1985, where she was active in choir. She was employed with Mercy Medical Center - Sioux City.
She was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and was active in youth activities. She was a former Girl Scout leader and active in the Riverside Project Activity committee (PAC), Neighbor Network and Mercy Employee Activity Council (EAC). She won several ribbons and trophies for ceramic competitions. She was an avid reader, a Bon Jovi fan and concert-goer.
Survivors include her father, Billie Joe Newland of Sioux City; two sisters, Debra Newland and Kathy Newland, both of Sioux City; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Shirley; and a brother, Erick Newland.
