24 March 2014ONAWA, Iowa | Evelyn C. Reed, 101, of Onawa died Saturday, March 22, 2014, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Dennis Burns officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery at Onawa. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Chapel in Onawa.
Evelyn Clara was born on July 30, 1912 on a farm near Soldier, Iowa, the daughter of Halver and Annie (Blowers) Lund. At age 10, she moved with her parents to Onawa, Iowa.
Evelyn and Fred Reed were united in marriage on April 5, 1930 in Elk Point, S.D. To this union, five children were born, Mary Jane, Charles, Jo Anne, Marlene and John. Her first year out of high school, she taught school on a normal training certificate. Twenty-three years later, after raising her five kids, she went back to college to help maintain her teaching certificate at which time she returned to teaching.
She enjoyed her large family and her many friends, as well as her years of teaching in the public school, Sunday school, and Bible study classes. Continuing her relationship with her students was her No. 1 priority.
She was an active member of First Christian Church in Onawa, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Ashton Women’s Club.
Survivors include her five children, Mary Jane (Ron) Opland of Johnston, Iowa, Charles (Iila) Reed of Mapleton, Iowa, Jo Anne (Bill) Archibald of Omaha, Marlene Richardson of Onawa, John (June) Reed of Roanoke, Va.; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Bette Swinnerton of Omaha and Ruth Lund of Onawa; several cousins; and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred, who passed away on May 7, 1990; son-in-law, Tom Richardson; great-grandson, Todd Archer; two sisters; one brother; and several in-laws.
