NAPA, CA - Raymond C. Croxdale, 79, passed at his home in Napa with his family present on Wednesday, July 8, 2009, after a long illness.

He was born in Mapleton, Iowa, on January 3, 1930, to John and Della Croxdale. Ray attended a one-room country school, Mapleton High School, then attended Chillicothe Business School in Chillicothe, MO. He married the former Lois Collins in Mapleton on November 12, 1954.

Ray was active in sports at his high school. He was a telegrapher for the Milwaukee Railroad. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Ray and Lois moved to Napa in 1957 with two small children. Ray was employed at the California Medical Facility for 24 years. He was a member of the California Correctional Officers Association and the Napa Genealogical Society. He coached baseball and basketball at St. John's Catholic School. As hobbies, he enjoyed reading, gardening (he was especially proud of his huge tomatoes), traveling, bluegrass music and following high school and college sports.

Ray loved his family, friends and neighbors. He was especially proud of his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lois Collins Croxdale of Nipa; four sons: John and Joe Croxdale of Napa, CA, Jim Croxdale and his wife Barb of Ames, IA, and Jerry Croxdale and his wife Katie of Edina, MN; one daughter: Jeanne Croxdale of Napa, CA; four grandchildren: Jake, Troy, McKenzie and Charlie Croxdale; brother and sister-in-law Tom and Marge Collins of Palo Alto, CA; and sister-in-law Barbara Collins of Napa, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons: James Allen and Joseph Allen.

The memorial service was held on Saturday, July 11, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Apollinaris Catholic Church in Napa.
