Ruby Amanda Uhl died Dec. 25 in Mapleton at the age of 94 years, 9 months, 16 days. She was born March 9, 1919, on a farm in rural Dow City, the daughter of Roy and Anna (Boehm) Boettger.

The family moved to the Hinton/Lawton area where Ruby graduated from Lawton High School with the class of 1938. She then attended and graduated from Schoenherr¹s Beauty School in Sioux City. She met Gilbert Uhl of Danbury through mutual friends. They were married Sept. 2, 1941, in the Cathedral in Sioux City. The couple farmed in the Danbury community where they raised their five children.

In 1994, Gib and Ruby moved in to Mapleton and learned to enjoy the ease of living in town and relaxing with friends over coffee along with other new hobbies. Gilbert passed away December 16, 1997.

Ruby was a faithful member of St. Mary¹s Catholic Church and St. Mary¹s Guild in Mapleton.

She was recognized for her delicious apple pies, potato salad, gravy and her overall talent in the kitchen. Even though she enjoyed cooking, she was always eager and ready to go out to eat. She also liked to go to the Senior Citizen’s Center to share time with friends. Above all, Ruby was family orientated and baby sat for her grand kids whenever they needed her. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

Those family members surviving Ruby are her children, Darlene Limoges and her husband, Dale, of Granger, Charlene Grell and her husband, Arnold “Butch” of Moville, Ronald Uhl and his wife, Kay, and Roger Uhl and his wife, Benita, all of Mapleton; a daughter-in-law, Norma Uhl of Danbury; 10 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Along with her husband, Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Marvin “Gooter” Uhl; two brothers, Herbert and Elmer Boettger; and one sister, Marjorie Smith.

Memorials may be directed in Ruby’s memory to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 703 Heisler St. in Mapleton.

A Funeral Mass was held Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mapleton with Rev. Dan Greving officiating. Message in Music was by Mark O’Connell, accompanist.

Pallbearers were Troy Uhl, Darrin Limoges, Tim Grell, Dustin Limoges, Jeff Grell, Damian Limoges, Ryan Uhl, and Chad Uhl. Honorary Pallbearers were Stacey Petersen and Tonya Uhl.

Server was Kylie Limoges. Lector was Dale Limoges. Offertory Procession were Darlene Limoges and Charlene Grell. Eucharistic Ministers were Dale and Darlene Limoges.

Visitation was held Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, after 3:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Mapleton, with Rosary by St. Mary’s Guild at 4 p.m. A Vigil Wake Service was at 6 p.m.

Interment was at Danbury Catholic Cemetery, Danbury.

Everyone attending was invited and encouraged to go to the church basement following the interment for a time of sharing food and fellowship.
