HENRY “RED” ROELSGARD

Henry “Red” Thomas Roelsgard 92, of Marshalltown, Iowa, formerly of Onawa, Iowa, died Sunday, December 13, 1987, at Grandview Heights Nursing Home in Marshalltown.

He was born September 3, 1895, at Hjorring, Denmark, to Thomas and Maren (Andersen) Roelsgard. After coming to this country at the age of 19, he made his home at Turin, Iowa. During World War I, he served in the U.S. Army with the cavalry in England and France. On August 10, 1932, he married Velma Parrish in Dakota City, Nebraska. The couple made their home in Onawa where he was employed at the Post Office for 25 years, retiring in 1962. She died May 28, 1978, in Onawa. He had been a resident of Marshalltown since 1980.

He was a member of First Christian Church of Onawa and had been a member of David McNeill Post #129 at Onawa for 69 years.

Survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, Martin and Ruth Roelsgard of Marshalltown; three grandchildren, Christa, Matthew and Jennifer Roelsgard; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Velma; and three brothers, Martin, John and Hans.

Services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 16, 1987, at the Pearson Funeral Chapel in Onawa with Rev. Everett Epperson officiating. The organist, Mrs. Robert Oehler, played “The Lord’s Prayer”.

Bearers were Ben Grandgenett, Ora Townsend, Richard Krumviede, Robert Stangel, Kenneth Stangel and Bert Hanson.

Interment was in the Onawa Cemetery with Military Graveside rites by David McNeill American Legion Post #129, Onawa, Orval Caldwell Commander.

Arrangements were by the Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.
