27 February 2014Madonna “Donna” Margaret Hintz, 80, of Ute, passed away Friday, Feb. 14, at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Neb.
Donna was born in Mapleton Oct. 6, 1933, the daughter of Dale and Margaret (McCall) Barnes. She grew up and attended school at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Mapleton.
In 1950, she married Veryl Buck at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mapleton. Due to his military career in the Air Force, the family traveled and resided around the world. Donna quoted that during that time of their life, they lived in 33 places in a 25 year span of time.
On Dec. 31, 1979, she married Larry Hintz in Council Bluffs and celebrated the event on New Year’s Eve across the river in Omaha, Neb.
Larry and Donna enjoyed their life in Ute where they became deeply involved in the function of the community. They were charter members in the organization of the Ute Ambulance Service. They both became EMTs and took courses so that they could teach EMT classes while at the same time were certified to offer highly skilled patient services when called out 24/7.
Donna continued this volunteer work for 20 years along with her full time work with her mother at the Barnes Cafe in Ute. The sacrifice of time with her family and their lives caused her to retire from her EMT volunteerism.
Other efforts in the community included home health care, blood pressure screening, and working the balloting site at election time.
When the Barnes Cafe became the Ute Senior Center, Donna continued there maintaining an enormous attendance for a small town. She soon came to operate it as it grew to its height not only offering noon meals but many other social and entertaining events. As life progressed, she felt the need to semi-retire from the Senior Citizens and sadly completely retired in 2012, which honestly left her without that fulfilling purpose it earlier gave her.
No matter how hot or cold it was, Donna loved to walk outside. Along with the physical benefits, really, it was her way to get out and visit with her neighbors and friends.
Donna was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ute. Larry passed away April 11, 2009.
Survivors include three children, Betty Hartigan of Ute; Dale Buck and his fiancee, Nancy Gieselman of Hermatite, Mo., and Debbie Schilling and her husband, David, of Scheldon; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, and “one on the way;” four sisters, Darlene Snow of Castana, Joan Ohlmeier and her husband, Wayne, of Ute, Kathy Carson also of Ute, and Janet Schneekloth and her husband, Gene, of Omaha, Neb.; a special friend, Don Bridgeman of Ute; numerous nieces and nephews; and other extended family members.
Along with her husband, Donna was preceded in death by her parents; a son-in-law, Everett Hartigan; three sisters-in-law; and five brothers-in-law.
The Funeral Mass was Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 2 p.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Charter Oak, with Rev. Paul Kelly officiating. Message in Music was by Colleen Henderson.
Pallbearers were grandsons Chris Hartiga, Sean Buck, Paul Buck, Mikey Schilling, Clinton Schilling, Kevin Davis. Honorary Pallbearers were Matt Buck, Andy Kuhlman, Denny Jahn.
Burial was in St. Clair Cemetery at Ute. Following the interment, everyone was invited and encouraged to go to the Armstrong Funeral Home Fellowship Hall for a luncheon.
Visitation was Monday, Feb. 17, after 5 p.m. with a Vigil Wake service at 7 p.m. at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Ute. Visitation resumed Tuesday one hour prior to the funeral Mass at the church.
