Roy William Lindley, 92, died Feb. 19 in Ida Grove. Roy was born April 17, 1921, at home on the “Goat Ranch” near Castana, the son of Jeff and Daisy (Sterner) Lindley. He grew up as a Methodist but was later baptized and confirmed into the Catholic faith. He was a long time member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ute.

Roy was inducted into the United States Army in 1942 at Camp Dodge. He was stationed at North Little Rock, Ark., where his job was driving service men to the train depot, preparing to leave for war. He was later honorably discharged and became a member of the American Legion Aaby Post #442 of Ute.

On March 3, 1942, Roy was united in matrimony to Dorothy Marie Cameron. They started farming together and from 1943 until 1946, lived in the “brick house” on “Dutch Hollow,” which was owned by his parents. They farmed near Danbury from 1946 until 1950. That year, Roy and Dorothy bought their farm near Soldier, and the family moved there in January 1950. It turned out the farm was where his brother-in-law, Floyd Strait, had been born.

In July 1971, Roy and Dorothy purchased the Dairy Treat in Ute from Frank and Arla Wilson. They changed it from walk up window service where you could order soft serve ice cream to a full service restaurant by building an addition.

In 1985, they retired and moved to the apartments on Riddle Avenue in Ute. Dorothy passed away Feb. 15, 2002. Roy continued to live in the apartment until he broke his ankle. He lived at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton from January 2005 until his death at Horn Memorial Hospital on Feb. 19 at the age 92.
