JOHN I. BROWN

John I. Brown, 90, of Ute died Tuesday, December 8, 1987 in a nursing home in Onawa after a long illness.

Mr. Brown was born May 20, 1897, in Omaha and moved with his parents to Ute in 1903. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I and then worked at Ute as a farm laborer. He re-enlisted in the Army during the 1930’s and served during World War II. On May 23, 1942, he married Maude Barnes in Minneapolis. He was discharged from the service in 1946 and the couple made their home at Seattle, Wash., where he was employed at a cement structure manufacturing company. Mrs. Brown died June 1, 1963, in Seattle and he returned to Ute in 1974. Since 1981, he had been a resident of Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.

Mr. Brown was a member of the VFW and a charter member of the American Legion of Ute.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Lydia Thompson of Lawton and a half-sister, Mrs. Marie Cunningham of San Francisco.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 11, 1987 in the Walter Funeral Home in Ute with the Rev. Mark Smeltzer officiating. Burial was in St. Clair Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by Aaby Post 442, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5605 of Ute.
