ANDREW M. BALLANTYNE

Andrew M. Ballantyne, 79, Onawa, Iowa, died Wednesday, December 2, 1987, at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, following heart surgery.

He was born August 3, 1908, in Spring Valley Township, Monona County, Iowa, to Mark and Sophia (Skow) Ballantyne. He graduated from Soldier High School in 1926. On December 31, 1938, he married Edras (Lozier) Adams at Moorhead. She had been married to Gerald Adams from June 11, 1928, until his death on January 22, 1936. The couple owned and operated Walnut Glen Orchard at Moorhead. In 1948, they moved to Soldier and operated Ballantyne’s Grocery and Variety Store, retiring in 1972. They had lived in Onawa since 1973.

He was a member of first Christian Church and served on the Board of Elders. He served on the Spring Valley Township School Board, Soldier Town Council, and Moorhead Christian Church Board. He was currently serving as chairman of the Onawa Senior Citizens.

Survivors include: his wife, Edras; one son, Marvin of Montrose, Colo.; two step-daughters, Wanda Adams of Iowa City and Mrs. Donald (Geraldine) Adams Shrandt of Denver, Colo.; one sister, Mrs. Norman (Mable) McCallum of Soldier; an aunt, Ella Severson of Sioux City; 12 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Gladys Smith; and one brother, Floyd “Bill” Ballantyne.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 5, 1987, at the First Christian Church in Onawa with Rev. Jerry Quandt officiating. Mrs. Vince Phillips, the organist, played “In the Garden” and “How Great Thou Art”.

Honorary Bearers were Robert Miller, Omar Nelson, Everett Epperson, Vern Rounds, Clarion Nelson, Maynard Swenson, Leo Carlson and Bill Reynolds.

Active Bearers were Howard Hathaway, Joe Jackson, Gerald D. Miller, Wayne Gries, Earl Doll and Ken Smith.

Interment was in Spring Valley Cemetery at Moorhead with arrangements by the Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.
