JOHN EDWARD BOWLEN

John Edward Bowlen, Onawa, Iowa, died on Sunday morning, November 1, 1987, at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa, following a long and serious illness. Death came at the age of 77 years, 11 months and 15 days.

He was born November 16, 1909, in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of Edward and Mattie (Pound) Bowlen. He came to Onawa in 1936. He married Frances Louise Perry, January 12, 1939, in Platte City, Missouri. Mrs. Bowlen died August 10, 1976, in Sioux City.

He worked for the Missouri Dock and Dredge and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers until retiring in 1975. John was licensed to pilot any motorized boat less than 65 feet.

Survivors include one sister, Louise Moore, of Onawa; one brother, Clarence J. Harding, Oriskany Falls, N.Y.; three nephews, Michael Tuohey of San Diego, Calif., Carl Moore of Council Bluffs, Ia. and James Harding of Utica, N.Y.; two nieces Patricia Presta of Erie, Pa. and Janice Frederick of Oriskany Falls, N.Y.; nine great nieces and nephews; one brother-in-law, Charles D. Elliott, of Sutter, Ca. and his family; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and three sisters, Agnes, Mary and Margaret.

Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 4, 1987, at the Pearson Funeral Chapel in Onawa with Rev. Jerry Quandt officiating. Mrs. Jack Jordan, the organist, accompanied Rev. Jerry Quandt in the vocal selections “The Old Rugged Cross” and “In the Garden”.

Bearers were Carl Edward Moore, Merle Olson, Lyle Lambert, Clarence Fister, Charles Framke and Neal Funkhouser.

Interment was in the Onawa Cemetery with arrangements by the Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.
