ALTA EDITH BRILEY

Alta Edith Briley, 90, of Onawa, Iowa, died Saturday, November 7, 1987, at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa after a one-year illness.

She was born September 22, 1897, at Audubon, Iowa, to Alfred and Mary (Fisher) Arney, and came to Onawa at the age of 10. In October 1916, she married Elmer Miller in Sioux City. He died January 26, 1929, in Onawa. She married P. L. “Lee” Briley on February 8, 1930, in Elk Point, South Dakota. The couple lived in Onawa and then at Omaha for 30 years before retiring to Onawa in 1966. She had been a waitress at the old Onawa Café and had attended Brown’s Beauty School in Omaha.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, Onawa, Iowa.

Survivors include her husband, P. L. “Lee” Briley; two daughters, Mrs. Orville (Carma) Hames of LeMars and Mrs. Robert (Jeanne) Felker of Omaha, Nebr.; two sons, Richard and Betty Briley and Robert and Mary Briley, all of Omaha; 15 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Drew and Eldie; and two sisters, Elsie Miller and Mildred Hanline.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 10, 1987, at the First Christian Church, Onawa, Iowa, with Rev. Jerry Quandt and Rev. Everett Epperson officiating. The organist was Mrs. Vince Phillips and the soloist, Mrs. Fred Gibson, sang “Peace in the Valley” and “The Lord’s Prayer”.

Casket bearers were Orville Hames, Jr., Robert Hames, Mitchell Arney, Gary Briley, James Miller, Matthew Haney, Ryan Haney and Michael Briley.

Interment was in the Onawa Cemetery, Onawa, Iowa, with arrangements by Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.
