CHARLES HATT PLUMMER

Charles Hatt Plummer, 50, New York City, formerly of LeMars, Iowa, died Saturday, October 31, 1987, in the Veterans’ Administration Hospital in New York City of cancer.

He was born October 12, 1937, in Sioux City to Charles B. and Alice (Hatt) Plummer. His grandfather, Charles Hatt, who farmed south of the cemetery, had seven children—one of whom was Alice Hatt, who was Charles’ mother. He was raised in LeMars and attended the LeMars schools, graduating from LeMars High School. He attended Westmar College and graduated from the University of Iowa at Iowa City with a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in Language in Art. He was never married.

He served in the Vietnam War as a Vietnamese translator and taught for seven years at St. Francis Xavier University at Antigonish, Nova Scotia.

His Russian translations are at the Library of Congress. He traveled extensively as a scholar. Charles was a musician and an artist.

He was affiliated with the Episcopalian Church.

Survivors include: two sisters, Mrs. Jerald (Betty) Loper of Albert Lea, Minn. and Mrs. Robert (Joan) Tschirki of Littleton, Colo.; nieces and nephews, Steven and Melissa Loper of Albert Lea, Rhonda Tschirki of Seal Beach, Calif., Mrs. Thomas (Lona) O’Brien of Denver and Chris Tschirki of Littleton.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 6, 1987, at the Pearson Funeral Chapel, Onawa, Iowa, with Rev. Jerald Loper officiating. Music was a French horn solo.

Honorary bearers were David Dubin and Gilbert Martinez.

Active bearers were Melissa Loper, Steven Loper, Christopher Tschirki, Rhonda Tschirki and Lona O’Brien.

Interment was in the Onawa Cemetery, Onawa, Iowa.

A memorial has been established to the Veterans of Vietnam at Washington, D.C.
