HARRY MICHAELSEN

Harry Michaelsen, 92, of Smithland died Wednesday, October 21, 1987, at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Whiting, Iowa, after a long illness.

He was born September 10, 1895, in rural Holstein, Iowa. On November 17, 1923, he married Sarah Bernice Jones in Sioux City. During World War I, he served his country in the U.S. Army. The couple came to Smithland in 1940. He was a farmer and also was employed for 10 years at Westendorf Manufacturing in Smithland starting in 1948. He retired in 1958. Mrs. Michaelsen died February 14, 1979 in Sioux City. He had lived at Matney Manor in Sioux City from April 1982 to January 1986 when he made his home in Pleasant View Nursing Home in Whiting.

He was a member of the Smithland United Methodist Church and was a charter member of the Leslie F. Seaton American Legion Post #666 of Smithland.

Survivors include: one daughter, Mrs. Harold (Phyllis) Kirsch of Hornick; one son, Robert of Torrance, Calif.; three sisters, Mrs. Lena Hummel of Spirit Lake, Mrs. Marie Benedix of Correctionville, and Mrs. Theresa Brosamle of Holstein; four grandchildren, Robert M. Jr. and Vickie Herbert, both of Torrance, Calif., Sharyn Cook of Havelock, Ia. and Sandi Gilligan of South Sioux City, Nebr.; and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; twin girls; two brothers; and four sisters.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, October 23, 1987, at the United Methodist Church, Smithland, Iowa, with Rev. Gary DeGeest officiating. The organist was Mrs. Orval Cox and the Hornick Men’s Quartet sang “How Great Thou Art” and “The Old Rugged Cross”.

Casket bearers were Douglas Cook, Terry Gilligan, Alvin Michaelsen, Dick Brosamle, Robert Benedix and Howard Michaelsen.

Interment was in the Little Sioux Township Cemetery, Smithland, Iowa, with arrangements by Willman Funeral Home, Rodney, Iowa.
