Sylvia Boyles Hodges Kennedy, San Diego, California, formerly of Sloan, Iowa, died Tuesday, September 22, 1987, in Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Death came at the age of 89 years, 6 months and 19 days.

She was born March 3, 1898, in Woodbury County, Iowa, the daughter of Sanders and Mary Ann (Boyd) Boyles. She graduated from Sloan High School and a Washington, D.C. business college. She married Grover Hodges in 1919 in Chicago. They made their home in LaFayette, Indiana. He died in 1926. She then moved to Washington, D.C., where she was employed as a statistician with the U.S. Department of Labor for 30 years. She later was a real estate agent. In 1941 she married John Robie Kennedy in Takoma Park, Md. He preceded her in death. For more than 20 years she had been a resident of San Diego.

Mrs. Kennedy was affiliated with the Congregational Church. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for more than 50 years and a member of the San Diego Zoological Society.

Survivors include many cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, a daughter, Mary Estelle Hodges, and eight brothers and sisters.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 24, 1987, at the United Congregational Church of Christ in Sloan with Rev. Arthur G. Hermanson officiating. Mrs. Glen Miltenberger was the organist.

Bearers were Art Boyd, Merrill Boyd, Harold Boyd, Harold Dean, Carleton Carlson and Donald Tracy.

Interment was in the Sloan Cemetery with arrangements by the Wood Funeral Home, Sloan, Iowa.
