DEATH TAKES FORMER MAPLETON MAYOR SANFORD

Willard G. Sanford, 87, of Mapleton died Thursday, September 10, 1987 at his residence in Mapleton.

Mr. Sanford was born August 17, 1900, in Smithland. In 1927 he moved to Mapleton and became engaged in the John Deere Implement business. He married Esther Burnette June 26, 1927, in Osceola. From 1929 to 1939 he was a partner with Chris Andersen in Andersen-Sanford Implement Co. in Mapleton. Later he was a representative for Bankers Life of Iowa as an insurance agent for more than 37 years. From 1962 to 1972 he managed the Smithland Office of the First State Bank of Mapleton and also served the bank as director for more than 30 years. He served as mayor and councilman of Mapleton for several terms.

Mr. Sanford was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church and served on the building committee. He was a 50-year member of Quarry Lodge 404 AF & AM, Sioux City Consistory and the Sioux City Shrine Temple. He was a lifetime member of the Mapleton Community Club and Past Master of Quarry Lodge. He was a member of Willow Vale Golf Club for more than 50 years and served as president. He was a member of Old Timers Golf Club and member and former treasurer of the Mapleton School Board.

Mr. Sanford is survived by his wife.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 12, 1987 at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Mapleton. The Rev. Dick Krambeck officiated. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery. Masonic services were conducted by Quarry Lodge 404 AM & FM in Walter Funeral Home in Mapleton.
