MELVIN “SHORTY” CARLEY

Melvin L. “Shorty” Carley, 69, of Mapleton died Thursday, September 10, 1987 at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa after a long illness.

Mr. Carley was born November 5, 1917, at Exira. He worked in newspaper offices in Harlan, Rock Valley, Audubon and Glenwood. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On May 19, 1951 he married Mary Zinke at Bentonville, Ark. In 1954 they moved to Mapleton where he worked for the Mapleton Press for more than seventeen years.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Kenneth at home, Robert of Sioux City, Michael of Carroll and Ronnie of Dumas, Texas; three sisters, Schrilda Elder of Council Bluffs, and Bertha Herrick and Iva Dell Brooks, both of California; eight grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 12, 1987 at the Walter Funeral Home in Mapleton. The Rev. Richard Hempenius officiated. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery with military graveside services conducted by Loren Hollister Post 496, American Legion of Mapleton.
