Bert McGrane, 90, a resident of Onawa since 1985 and former Des Moines sports writer, died Sunday, July 20, 1987, in Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa.

He was born August 31, 1896, at Shullsburg, Wisconsin, the son of William and Margaret (Thomas) McGrane. He moved to Des Moines as a child. He graduated from North High School and attended Drake University and the University of Iowa. He served with the U.S. Army during World War I. On June 17, 1924, he married Veronica Rhody in Casey, Iowa. He was a sports writer with the Des Moines Register for 45 years, covering football, basketball, golf and track. He also wrote a daily column On the Sidelines. After his retirement in 1967, he served as editor of The 5th Down, official publication of the Football Writers Association of America.

He was a member of the American Legion and Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, Veronica, of Onawa; three sons, Michael of Onawa, Martin of Madison, S.D., and Bill of Chicago, Ill.; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Betsy) Haberer of Boone and Miriam Martin of Des Moines; 23 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Funeral Mass was held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 21, 1987, at St. Johnís Catholic Church, Onawa. Mass Celebrants were Monsignor Richard Zenk, Monsignor John Gorman and Monsignor Tolan. Mrs. James Stangel was organist.

Bearers were Jim Haberer, Tom Haberer, Joe Martin, Paul Binder, John Martin, Dave Martin and John Cashman.

Interment was at 4:00 p.m. on July 21, 1987, in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Casey, Iowa, with Monsignor John Gorman officiating.

Arrangements were by the Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.
