Ronald “Ron” M. Shol, 86, of Moorhead died peacefully on Friday, Feb. 7, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.

Ronald “Ron” M. was born on April 27, 1927, near Moorhead, the son of Elmer Oldon and Leone Ione (Stolley) Shol. He attended country school and graduated from Moorhead High School in 1944.

In February of 1946 Ron enlisted in the United States Navy. He served two years and was stationed in Seattle, Wash., where he was briefly married to Gene Neuman.

Ron returned to the farm in 1948 near Moorhead and married Norma Jeanne Hinkel. He farmed with his dad.

Ron worked on road construction from 1955 to 1960, when he returned to the family farm. At that time he purchased a D-7 Cat, doing conservation work for area farmers along with farming.

Ron married Colleen Yvonne (Rude) Solberg on Dec. 1, 1967. Ron and Colleen purchased the family farm shortly after being married and have lived there ever since. Ron retired from farming in 1993, keeping his dozer and maintainer to do small jobs on the farm and in the area.

Ron enjoyed playing golf, and had an amazing gift to play music by ear with no sheet music. He also enjoyed mowing the lawn and around the buildings. He enjoyed camping and entertaining the grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Colleen Shol of Moorhead; six children, John Shol of Washington, Wendy Shol of Bellevue, Wash., Vicki Shol of Omaha, Neb., Lori (Steve) Soukup of Phoenix, Ariz., Kari (Kevin) Hadden of Anthon, and Shari (Ron) Sitzmann of LeMars; four grandchildren, Brandon (Stephanie) Sitzmann, Colton (special friend, Lacey Plathe) Hadden, Trent Sitzmann, and Derek Hadden; two sisters, Bernadine Hansen of Moorhead and Darlene (Deryle) Bowen of Moorhead; one brother, Robert Shol of Moorhead; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Howard Shol; and a brother-in-law, Juhl Hansen; nephew, Rodney Hansen; and a niece, Rhonda Cline.

Memorial services were 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Moorhead with Pastor Carla Johnsen officiating. Music selections were “When Peace Like a River” – congregational, “Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone” – solo, and “On The Wings Of A Snow White Dove” – recording, with Sam Johnson as soloist and Deb Lauritsen as organist. Private family burial will be at a later date. Visitation with the family present was 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church. Arrangements were under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Honorary Bearers were Ron’s four grandsons, Brandon Sitzmann, Colton Hadden, Trent Sitzmann, and Derek Hadden.
