Hazel M. Buchanan, 68, of Hartington, Neb., died March 15, 1987 at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, S. D.

She was born June 30, 1918 at Onawa, Iowa to Lawrence P. and Grace Richardson Rodgers. On May 23, 1943 she married L. J. “Jim” Buchanan at Hartington, Neb.

Mrs. Buchanan was a graduate of Onawa High School in 1936 and resided there until 1941 when she moved to Sioux City. After her marriage she lived at Hartington, Neb. She was employed by Northwestern Bell from 1936-1941 in Onawa. She was promoted to night supervisor and transferred to Sioux City in 1941, where she worked until her marriage in 1943.

Mrs. Buchanan was very active in crafts and ceramic work and was a long time ceramic instructor. She was active in Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts for many years and was also active in the Women’s Social Activities at the Hartington Country Club.

Survivors include her husband; one son and daughter-in-law, James R. and Dorothea L. Buchanan of Omaha, Neb.; two daughters, Judith of Sioux Falls, S. D., and Mrs. Steven G. (Kathryn “Kitsy”) Wortmann of Norfolk, Neb.; two brothers, Maurice Rodgers of Baltimore, Md. and Kenneth Rodgers of Onawa; three sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Galles of Mishawaka, Ind., Mrs. Glen (Mardelle) Holt, of Sioux City, Mrs. Paul (June) Geadelmann, of Mapleton; and two grandchildren, James M. and Kristin L. Buchanan of Omaha, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Betty Reese.

Services were held Tuesday, March 17, 1987, at 2 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington, Neb. with Monsignor Cyril Werner officiating. Ann Parker, organist played the selection “Amazing Grace”.

Pallbearers were Anton Eickhoff, Paul Robinson, Dan Garner, Don Miller, John Crumly and Tom Kelly.

Interment was in the Hartington City Cemetery, Hartington, Neb. with arrangements by the Wintz Funeral Home of Hartington.

Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association.
